With deep sadness we are announcing the CANCELLATION of our 2020 Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon Race Weekend.
Participants with a paid registration in the 2020 race weekend have three options:
More details about these options are answered in the FAQ below. If your question isn’t answered in the FAQ, contact us.
April 29–May 1, 2021.
April 28–30, 2022.
Give us a call on the race hotline—217/372-1444—and we’ll assist you. Or you can contact the support team at Race Roster for assistance: 855/969-5515.
You need to let us know by May 31, 2020.
We need to wrap up the 2020 race as soon as possible. Registration for our 2021 race weekend will open in early July. The May 31 deadline ensures you reserve your space before the race slots are taken. Entrants who select the 100% registration credit option for the 2021 race weekend will register during the month of June, before we open registration for 2021 to the general public.
We will send an email to all virtual participants with instructions, including how to submit your results. But here are the basics: Run or walk or roll your race on the day/time/place that works best for you. (If you are an I-Challenger, you’ll be completing two races.) Be sure to follow the safety guidelines that have been laid out by your local government regarding COVID-19. The deadline for submitting your virtual results is July 15, 2020. The virtual races are being conducted on an honor system! Please uphold the spirit of honest racing by running the full distance of your race and reporting accurate times.
All virtual participants who complete their race(s) and submit their finish time(s) will receive their race swag—drawstring bag, race shirt(s), and finisher medal(s). These items will be available in August for pick up at Body n’ Sole Sports (1317 N Dunlap Ave, Savoy, IL 61874) or we’ll ship the goodies to you. Please note: virtual marathon finish times DO NOT qualify you for the Boston Marathon.
Yes, I-Challenge entrants who opt to complete their races virtually must complete both distances and submit results for both events, and—YES—you will receive all your 2020 race swag!
While there are no restrictions on where you complete your virtual race, please keep safety top of mind and follow all ordinances in place regarding COVID-19. As long as you aren’t violating social distancing guidelines, feel free to run on our race routes in Champaign-Urbana.
2020 entrants who choose to receive a 100% registration credit toward our 2021 race weekend will receive an email in early June with instructions and a unique promo code to register online for the same race in 2021 that they were registered for in 2020. Once you receive your unique promo code, you will have until June 30 to register for the 2021 race weekend. 2020 entrants who choose to receive a 100% registration credit toward for our 2022 race weekend will receive an email in June 2021 with a unique promo code to register online for the same race in 2022 that they were registered for in 2020. We will let you know then the date by which you need to register for the 2022 race weekend using your unique code.
You do need to re-register for the race year you’ve selected. 2020 entrants who choose a 100% registration credit for the 2021 race weekend will receive an email in early June with instructions and a unique promo code to register online for the same race in 2021 that they were registered for in 2020.
Once you receive your unique promo code, you will have until June 30 to register for the 2021 race weekend.
Because we have race number limits on our events, we want all our 2020 entrants who opted for free entry into our 2021 race weekend to get registered BEFORE we open our 2021 registration to the general public in early July. This is the only way to ensure that you will be registered before the race reaches capacity.
Send an email to director@illinoismarathon.com or call the race hotline @ 217/372-1444 and we’ll assist you. You can also contact the support team at Race Roster for assistance with this: 855/969-5515.
Unfortunately, no. Registration insurance through Protecht/Fanshield covers 17 reasons why you might not be able to attend race weekend; the race being cancelled due to a pandemic is not one of the reasons.
Yes, if you paid for Protecht/Fanshield race insurance when you registered for our 2020 race weekend and you choose to receive a 100% credit to register for our 2021 race weekend, your insurance policy will be valid for your 2021 registration. This option is not available to those entrants who defer their entries to the 2022 race weekend.
Simply reach out to the race team at director@illinoismarathon.com and we will help you get switched to the distance that is right for you.
Initially, you must use the unique registration promo code to get yourself registered. The code won’t work for anyone else. However, once you’ve registered, you can use our TRANSFER tool to switch your registration to someone else. Instructions for how to use the transfer tool can be found here.
If you find yourself in this situation, your best option would be to use the TRANSFER tool to transfer your registration to a friend or family member. Instructions for how to use the transfer tool can be found here.
If you want to donate your registration fee, please email director@illinoismarathon.com. Your registration fee will be donated to the Champaign-Urbana COVID-19 Relief Fund, managed by United Way of Champaign County. https://www.uwayhelps.org/COVID19

Yes, after the virtual race results submission deadline closes on July 15, we will send the results data to iTab. They will create the results plates for the finisher medals and mail them to all eligible race entrants. I-Challenge entrants who paid for iTab plates for all three of their medals will be mailed all three.
Yes, for iTab purchases, we will transfer your purchase to your new registration, in either 2021 or 2022, depending which year you choose.

We have sent all money donated to our 12 Charity Running Partners to them, and the charities all have received their donations.
The COVID-19 pandemic has put us in an unpredictable position. After exploring many options regarding the cancellation of our 2020 race, we determined that offering our 2020 entrants the flexibility to complete their race virtually or receive a 100% registration credit into our 2021 or 2022 race weekend were the best options. Due to the many expenditures that we have already incurred for this year’s cancelled race weekend, there is simply no way we can offer our 2020 entrants a free entry into our 2021 or 2022 race weekend and also issue refunds.
We did not, but even if we had, the race cancellation insurance would not have covered COVID-19. It’s possible at some point in the future that insurance coverage will change to cover “cancellation in the event of a disease pandemic.”
When we announced the postponement of race weekend on March 12, we had good reason to believe we would be able to reschedule our 2020 race weekend later in the year. As we move into our third month since the start of the pandemic, it is clear that is no longer a reasonable option. The size, scope, and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic finds communities like ours in an ongoing state of uncertainty, with no clear picture of what the coming months will look like.
Such uncertainty makes it impossible for us to reschedule race weekend. A blueprint does not yet exist for how to conduct large-scale sporting events safely in the current COVID-19 climate.
We are all in this together and we all share in your disappointment. These past 11 years, the Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon Race Weekend has come to mean so much to you, our community, our volunteers, our sponsors, and our charities, and our local businesses and organizations. The cancellation is extremely unfortunate but is the right decision considering the circumstances our world and community are in.
All 2020 entrants who complete their events virtually will receive their 2020 race swag—drawstring bag, finisher shirt(s), and finisher medal(s)—later this summer.
All 2020 entrants who opt to receive a 100% registration credit from this year and register for the 2021 race weekend will receive a one-of-a-kind race shirt next year: their keepsake 2021 race shirt will feature the 2020 T-shirt design on the front and a unique, still-to-be created 2021 design on the back that reflects the historic nature of circumstances that lead them to be running or walking with us in 2021. In addition to the complimentary one-of-a-kind race shirt that you’ll be receiving, you can purchase the 2021 race shirt that new 2021 entrants will be receiving.
If you choose the 100% registration credit and re-register for our 2021 race weekend, when you come to packet pick up to get your 2021 race shirt and drawstring bag, we will give you—as a GIFT—the 2020 finisher medal(s) you would have received in April 2020. We will have new 2021 finisher medals for every 2021 finisher, but we want to make sure our 2020 entrants get these 2020 medals as another historic memento of what we all went through together.
If so, send us an email at director@illinoismarathon.com or call the race hotline at 217/372-1444.
Thank you for your understanding and support. This is new territory for all of us.
Everyone associated with our race weekend is as disheartened as you are that we can’t come together this year. But your safety and well-being is our top priority, and we’re excited we can provide our 2020 participants 100% registration credit into either our 2021 or 2022 race weekend or a great virtual race opportunity this year. We can’t wait for an exceptional LUCKY 13th annual race weekend next April 29–May 1, 2021.
Thank you.
Kindest regards,
